Liminal ChessIn development

Online chess, played on a real board.

Liminal Chess is a handmade wooden smart board that connects directly to Lichess, letting you play live opponents online while moving real pieces on a real board. No laptop beside the board. No phone between you and the game.

The Concept

Liminal Chess lives between two ways of playing: the physical board and the online world. You get the weight of a real piece, the focus of a real board, and the reach of a global chess community. Your moves travel online and back again, but the game stays where it belongs: on the board.

The name marks that threshold. A liminal space is a place of passage between two states, and this board is the doorway between the tactile and the connected.

Made for players who miss the board.

Liminal Chess is for people who love online chess but do not want every game to feel like more screen time. It is for players who care about the feel of the pieces, the rhythm of a real board, and the quiet focus of sitting across from the game, even when the opponent is somewhere else.

The Craft

Each board is built like a piece of fine furniture, not wrapped like a piece of consumer electronics. The playing surface is made from a variety of solid hardwoods using traditional plank construction, not veneer, with the grain, contrast, and aging character of the wood treated as part of the design. The result is a board that feels substantial and tactile, meant to live in the room long after the game is over.

What makes the board unusual is what you cannot see. The entire sensing system is hidden beneath the playing surface, so the object on your table reads as a fine chess set and nothing more.

The Technology

Beneath the surface, an array of Hall-effect sensors reads the magnetic signature of each piece, square by square, so the board always knows the exact position of the game. A compact processor interprets those readings and manages the game state.

Liminal Chess connects to Lichess through its official Board API, the same interface sanctioned for physical boards. A small display on the board's edge shows the clock, the move list, and whose turn it is, so you stay oriented without looking away from the wood.
