Nalu
Surf conditions, refined.

The Art
Nalu is an ambient data sculpture that displays real-time and predicted surf conditions. Carved from a single block of sustainable hardwood and mounted on a laser-cut steel base, Nalu uses satellite topographic and bathymetric elevation data to accurately reproduce terrain above and below the ocean.

The Technology
Iconic surfing locations are depicted by fiberoptic elements embedded in the resin ocean floor and controlled by custom hardware. After defining their ideal surf conditions on the web portal, owners see their personalized surf report. A rear-mounted toggle lets you scroll between current and forecast data.

The Surf
Nalu uses high-resolution forecast data that updates every fifteen minutes through Storm Glass. Storm Glass selects from trusted meteorological sources, including NOAA, Météo-France, Deutscher Wetterdienst, and the UK Met Office.

The Editions

Norcal
The northern California coast is one of the most iconic and scenic coastlines in the world.

Socal
Golden sunsets, sandy beaches, perfect waves. That is Socal.

Hawaiian Islands
A surfing mecca, home to some of the tallest and cleanest waves in the world.

Hawaii
The Big Island is the youngest of the islands, with fewer beaches and surf spots than the others, and surfing for every level.
Nalu established wood + code's core approach: physical objects that quietly translate live data into something tactile and beautiful. Liminal Chess carries that idea into live play.
